The Top 16 Best Thin Mattresses – Reviews and Buyer’s Guide 2023

Do you want to find the best thin mattress? We’ve got you covered.

Thin mattresses are great for all kinds of situations and for all kinds of people: from kids right through to the elderly, thinner mattresses can be comfortable and supportive at the same time.

They can even sometimes be good for people with back pain, as they encourage good spinal alignment.

Plus, while they’re not technically classed as portable mattresses, they tend to be pretty light and easy to roll up – and they’re way more portable than a thick mattress!

But how can you find the right one? What should you be looking for? And which thin mattresses are the best?

We can answer all those questions. We’ll take a comprehensive look at 16 of the best thin mattresses out there, including all the things we like about them, what could be improved, and whether we consider them to be good value.

Let’s start with what you should be looking out for when you’re shopping for a thin mattress.

Buying Guide – How to Choose the Best Thin Mattress for You?

Here’s an overview of the main things to consider while you’re mattress shopping:

Design and Materials

Foam

Foam mattresses respond to your weight and pressure, contouring to the shape of your body. This makes them particularly good for pain relief, as they can help to reduce pressure points. They can constrict air circulation between you and your mattress, which isn’t ideal for hot sleepers.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses give you support via a series of coil springs. Innerspring mattresses have some motion transfer compared to foam mattresses, meaning you’re more likely to be disturbed if your partner moves around a lot.

Gel

Gel mattresses are a mixture of gel and foam. They can consist of one layer of gel (usually near the top) in a multiple layer foam mattress, or just one layer of gel and foam combined. The gel provides a cooling effect, which is ideal for hot sleepers. The downside is that the cooling effect can wear off.

Latex

Latex mattresses are made from rubber and give good support. Latex mattresses are bouncier and have a faster response time than memory foam mattresses (this means it will bounce back to its original position quickly when you move).

Air

Air mattresses (not to be confused with the kind you take camping) use air-filled chambers to provide support. The great thing about air mattresses is that they can sometimes be adjusted on both sides – so if your partner has a different preference for firmness than you, it’s perfect.

Hybrid

A hybrid mattress is made from multiple layers of different materials. It’s a great way to get the best features from every type of mattress. The downside is that you may end up spending more on a hybrid mattress.

Mattresses are made up of different layers. Typically you will see two main layers – the layer that provides support,  and a comfort layer on top.

Sometimes, there are actually several layers that make up the comfort layer – including an insulator to stop springs from poking through, a middle upholstery layer to give you the comfort you need to get a good night’s sleep, and a quilted top layer to add softness.

There are third-party certifications that you may see in the marketing material for mattresses. These can provide you with some reassurance that the mattress will be good for your health and for the environment.

Firmness and Comfort

You may see firmness described as a scale, with 1 being incredibly soft, and 10 being extra firm. Many mattresses fall into the medium range (so around 5-6).

Some mattresses are described as being ‘ergonomic’ – these mattresses are designed to conform to the natural curves of the spine and distribute even pressure across the body.

Also, something else to consider – which position do you sleep in? Back sleepers may prefer a firmer mattress, while side sleepers may prefer a softer foam mattress. Stomach sleepers may require something firmer to stop them from sinking too far into the bed.

Value

There are a few things you can look for to make sure you get the most value for your money:

  • Quality – Does the quality reflect the price? Check out the materials used – for example, if a mattress is made from foam, how many layers does it have, and what are the layers made of?
  • Price – Mattresses can range in price from $300 to $3000, so you should find something for your budget.
  • Warranty – Warranties can range from 1 year right through to 10 years or more.
  • Sleep Trial – Some companies offer a sleep trial, so you can test if the mattress works for you before committing to keeping it.
  • Durability – Some materials are more durable than others, with the average innerspring mattress lasting around 8-10 years.
Best Price Mattress 8 Inch Memory Foam Mattress, Calming Green Tea Infusion, Pressure Relieving, Bed-in-a-Box, CertiPUR-US Certified, Twin

Other Features

A thin mattress is around 6-8 inches thick, whereas the average mattress is around 9-12 inches thick.

You may also want to check how easy it is to store. If you’re wanting a mattress you can easily roll up and transport, a foam mattress is a good choice.

Finally, you may want to consider hygiene. Thinner mattresses can absorb sweat right through them, but a layer of cooling gel may help to prevent you from overheating.

Top 16 Best Thin Mattresses Reviews

AmazonBasics 8-Inch Memory Foam Mattress

Design and Materials

The AmazonBasics 8-Inch Memory Foam Mattress is made from three layers of memory foam – the bottom is a firm, dense support foam layer, the middle is made from breathable foam with larger air holes for ventilation, and the top layer is made from soft, plush comfort foam.

It has a soft, removable cover. The memory foam is CertiPUR-Us certified, and the top layer is Oeko-Tex certified.

Firmness and Comfort

This is a medium-firm mattress – the bottom layer of foam is firm enough to give decent back support, but the medium and top layers are softer, giving you a little bit of sinkage and a slightly more comfortable night’s sleep for those who are used to softer mattresses.

Users found it to be a comfortable mattress to sleep on with a nice, cozy feeling thanks to the soft top layer.

Value

This mattress comes with a 1-year warranty, which isn’t that long compared to others on this list. It doesn’t come with a sleep trial either.

For those reasons we don’t think it represents as good value for money as others on this list, but it does have free shipping.

Other Features

The open-cell foam in the middle layer encourages airflow, which is great for keeping cool, and having a removable cover is always a good bonus.

The lack of cooling gel lets it down slightly, so it may not be as good of a choice for hot sleepers (especially as it does have a bit of sinkage – hot sleepers might struggle with feeling stuffy and overwhelmed without the cooling gel to offset this).

It’s an 8-inch mattress, so at the thicker end of the scale for a thin mattress. It can still be rolled up and stored neatly, which is good.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • Soft and comfortable – good choice for those used to soft mattresses
  • Cover is removable, so can be hand-washed
  • Comes with free shipping and free returns

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • Warranty is short at one year
  • No cooling gel layer
  • No sleep trial

Best Price 8-Inch Memory Foam Mattress

Design and Materials

The Best Price 8-Inch Memory Foam Mattress has three layers – a layer of soft memory foam, a layer of ventilated soft foam, and a layer of high-density foam for support. It also has a poly-jacquard cover, which is removable.

The foam is CertiPUR-US Certified.

Firmness and Comfort

This is listed as a medium-firm mattress, but it’s actually pretty soft according to users. If you want a mattress that you can sink into, this is a good one. If you have lower back pain, you might want to look for something firmer.

It’s not ideal for heavier users, as it doesn’t provide quite enough support to stop the mattress from sagging. If you’re on the lighter side, you might find that this mattress suits you just right.

Value

This mattress comes with a 10-year warranty against manufacturing defects, but no sleep trial. The price is pretty reasonable, though.

Other Features

The foam is ventilated to increase airflow, which is great for hot sleepers. It doesn’t have a gel layer, though. You can remove the cover, but it’s not machine washable, so you’ll have to spot-clean it to keep it clean.

It’s an 8-inch mattress, so on the thicker side for a thin mattress.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • Comfortable for light users
  • Increased airflow thanks to foam design

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • Not great for heavier users
  • No sleep trial

Classic Brands Cool Gel Memory Foam Mattress

Design and Materials

The Classic Brands Cool Ventilated Gel Memory Foam Mattress is made from 2 inches of gel-infused memory foam, and 6 inches of high-density base support foam. It has a soft cover which is not meant to be removed.

The foam is CertiPUR-US Certified, meaning it is made without harmful ingredients like mercury, lead, or other heavy metals.

Firmness and Comfort

This is advertised as a medium-firm mattress, but users report it’s closer to ‘firm’ than ‘medium’. The top layer does provide a bit of comfort, but the base support foam is firm enough to give good back support. Users find it to be comfortable to sleep on, with the gel layer keeping them at a comfortable temperature.

Value

We think this mattress represents good value for money. It comes with a ten-year warranty, but no sleep trial. However, users report that it is durable and holds up really well over years of use, which is great.

Other Features

The cover is not meant to be removed, which means you’ll have to spot-clean it to keep it fresh. However, it is designed to be cool, with gel-infused memory foam on the top layer, and open-cell foam on the bottom layer (to increase ventilation).

It’s 8 inches thick, so it’s one of the thicker mattresses on this list, but it can still be rolled up and stored.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • It strikes a good balance between firmness and comfort
  • The cooling gel layer is nice for hot sleepers
  • It has a 10-year warranty

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • No sleep trial
  • No machine washable cover

Linenspa Firm Support 5-Inch Mattress

Design and Materials

The Linenspa Firm Support 5-Inch Mattress is made from 4 inches of high-density base foam, and 1 inch of gel-infused memory foam. It comes with a cover which is NOT designed to be removed, but instead must be spot cleaned.

The foam is CertiPUR-US certified.

Firmness and Comfort

This mattress is described as ‘firm,’ which most users seem to agree with – it’s not ideal for those looking for a squishy mattress! However, some users found that they still sank into it a little – heavier users might sink into this more than they would like, so they may need something slightly firmer or thicker.

It’s still comfortable despite being very thin, and it’s ideal for those suffering from back pain, as many people need something quite firm to support their spine.

The cover is nice and soft, too.

Value

Linenspa says that there is a trial period for their mattress, but you have to contact them to find out how long you’ll have to test it out. Having a trial period (however long it is) is a relief when you’re trying out a firm mattress for the first time, so this is good news. It also has a 10-year warranty against manufacturing defects.

It has a pretty good price point, so it represents good value for money, especially as users say it retains its firmness over time.

Other Features

The cooling gel on top is a good idea, but the lack of a removable cover is a bit of a letdown – if you do get hot and sweaty at night, it would be nice to have the option of being able to wash the cover.

It’s a very thin mattress at five inches, so it’s easy to roll up and store or transport.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • Thin and firm – ideal for some types of back pain
  • Trial period and 10-year warranty included
  • Cooling gel works really well

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • Lack of removable, washable cover

Linenspa Memory Foam / Innerspring Hybrid Mattress

DESIGN AND MATERIALS

The Linenspa 8-Inch Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress is a great choice if you want the best of both foam and innerspring. It’s made from a 6-inch layer of coils and a 2-inch layer of hypoallergenic memory foam. It also comes with a cozy knit cover, but it is not removable.

The foam is CertiPUR-US Certified.

FIRMNESS AND COMFORT

This is a medium-firm mattress, leaning more towards the firm. The top layer of foam will cause a little bit of sinkage, but the bottom layer is firm. Most users are happy with the level of comfort this mattress gives them. The knit cover is nice and cozy, too.

VALUE

This mattress comes with a 30-day trial period – but there’s a catch. If you’re buying this from Amazon, they won’t accept the return unless you can fit it into its original box, which cannot be done if it’s been opened.

They do offer a 10-year warranty against manufacturing defects. It has a pretty low price point too, so that’s a plus point.

OTHER FEATURES

It does not have a cooling gel layer – so hot sleepers might struggle with this one. This plus the non-removable cover means that you might struggle to keep this one clean and fresh after a while.

It’s an 8-inch mattress, and thanks to the springs, it feels more like a ‘traditional’ mattress. But this means it’s not ideal for rolling up or storing.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • Innerspring and foam combination is firm but comfortable
  • Soft knit cover is comfortable and cozy

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • Sleep trial and warranty are unnecessarily complicated to navigate
  • No cooling gel layer
  • No removable cover

LUCID 5-Inch Memory Foam Mattress

Design and Materials

The LUCID 5-Inch Memory Foam Mattress is composed of 1 inch of ventilated gel memory foam, and 4 inches of bamboo charcoal-infused support foam. It has a removable cover for easy cleaning. The foam is CertiPUR-US Certified.

Firmness and Comfort

This is, without a doubt, a firm mattress. Even users who are used to firm mattresses were impressed with how firm it actually is. If you know this suits you, that’s great – if not, you might want to keep looking!

It’s still comfortable, with even side sleepers being able to get comfortable on this mattress.

Value

It has a whopping 25-year warranty, making it the longest on this list. It’s on the cheaper side, too. It’s marketed as being ideal for kids, with users reporting that the mattress holds up even in the face of very active, wriggly children.

Other Features

The cover is removable and is hand washable (not machine washable). The cooling gel layer helps to prevent sleepers from getting too hot at night. The foam is infused with charcoal – this is good for preventing bacteria from developing and keeping odors at bay.

It’s also one of the thinnest on this list, at five inches. It’s ideal for moving between rooms, rolling up and storing, or transporting it in your car if you need to.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • Hypoallergenic materials used
  • Super thin and easy to transport
  • Charcoal-infused foam is good for reducing odors
  • Firm, but still comfortable
  • Fairly low cost

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • The cover is not machine washable

Modway Aveline Gel Infused Memory Foam Mattress

Design and Materials

The Modway Aveline mattress is made from two layers of foam – 1 inch of gel-infused foam and 5 inches of supportive foam. It comes with a diamond-patterned stretch knit cover, so it looks nice too. The foam is CertiPUR-US certified, so it’s made without heavy metals or toxic materials.

Firmness and Comfort

Users describe it as a ‘medium-firm’ mattress, with the top layer providing comfort. However, it’s still not ideal for those looking for a very plush mattress that they can sink into.

The stretch knit cover is really soft, providing users with another layer of comfort.

It’s designed to reduce pressure on your head, neck, and spine. This is ideal for those who suffer from lower back pain, as it helps to keep your spine correctly aligned.

Value

It has a 10-year warranty, which is great. However, it doesn’t come with a trial period, which is a shame. If you’ve never tried a thin mattress before, it might be worth testing one out before you commit to buying this one.

It’s also not the most durable thin mattress out there – some users reported that it began to sag after a few years of use.

Other Features

The cooling gel-infused foam layer on the top is great for preventing hot sleepers from sweating too much in the night. It also has an added benefit – the diamond pattern on the cover is designed to allow for more air circulation. The cover is machine washable too, making it super easy to keep clean.

It’s a 6-inch mattress, but you can go for the 8-inch version if you want a bit of extra thickness.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • Good for back pain
  • Cooling gel and breathable cover make it ideal for hot sleepers
  • Cover is machine washable – good for hygiene
  • Firm but comfortable

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • No sleep trial
  • Not as durable as some of the others on this list

Modway Emma Comfort Memory Foam Mattress

Design and Materials

The Modway Emma Comfort Memory Foam 6-Inch Mattress is made from two layers of memory foam – 5 inches of supportive, high-density foam, and 1 inch of soft comfort foam. It also has a comfortable, quilted pillowtop cover. It is not CertiPUR-US Certified at the time of writing.

Firmness and Comfort

This is advertised as a firm mattress, and it does provide good support. However, there is a little bit of sinkage, thanks in part to the quilted pillowtop cover, as well as the top layer of comfort foam. If you want something that is firm but still feels cozy, this could be a good choice for you.

Value

The Modway Emma only comes with a 1-year warranty, which is not much. It doesn’t have a sleep trial either. However, users felt that it still represented good value for money, as it has a decent price point and is pretty durable, too.

Other Features

This mattress isn’t going to be great for hot sleepers. It lacks a gel layer and the cover cannot be removed. That combined with the slight sinkage means it’s better suited to cool sleepers.

It’s a 6-inch mattress, and it’s ideal for rolling up and storing away neatly.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • Feels cozy to sleep on
  • Base layer provides good support
  • Decent price point with durable materials

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • Short warranty and no sleep trial
  • Not great for hot sleepers

Modway Jenna 8-Inch Innerspring Mattress

Design and Materials

The Modway Jenna 8-Inch Innerspring Mattress is made from several layers. The bottom layer consists of individually wrapped coils, followed by a felt liner to prevent the coils from poking through.

Then there is a ‘pillowtop’ section, which consists of one layer of ‘egg-crate foam,’ followed by a thin layer of responsive foam on top. It also comes with a quilted polyester top cover.

This mattress is not CertiPUR-US Certified.

Firmness and Comfort

This is a medium-firm mattress, but it leans more towards the ‘medium’ than ‘firm’. It’s very comfortable, especially with the ‘pillowtop’ layers and the quilted cover.

Most users find it to be cushioned, but also supportive. However, some heavier users found that it didn’t feel quite supportive enough for them to be comfortable.

Value

There is no trial period for this mattress, and the warranty is pretty stingy in comparison to others on this list, at just one year. It does have a pretty good price point, but we don’t think it’s quite as good value for money as some of the others we’ve reviewed here because of the lack of sleep trial and shorter warranty.

Other Features

There is no cooling layer here, but because people of average size won’t sink into it too much, you won’t get as hot as you would with a pure memory foam mattress.

The egg-crate layer helps to promote airflow, too, helping to keep you cool. Unfortunately, the mattress cover is not removable, so it needs to be spot cleaned – which means that if you do get sweaty at night, it will be tougher to keep it hygienic.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • Soft and comfortable, but still supportive
  • Pillowtop layer is extra comfy

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • Short warranty and no trial period
  • No removable mattress cover

Nod by Tuft and Needle Adaptive Foam Mattress

Design and Materials

The Nod by Tuft and Needle Adaptive Foam Mattress is made from two layers of foam – the bottom 5.5-inch layer is a dense polyurethane foam, while the top layer is a 2.5-inch layer of soft, responsive polyurethane foam. It has a removable cover that is not machine washable.

It is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certified.

Firmness and Comfort

It’s a medium-firm mattress, leaning slightly more towards firm according to users. It’s a nice comfortable mattress with a decent amount of softness on top, so if you like the feeling of settling into a cozy mattress, it could be a good choice.

It’s designed to prevent you from sinking into it (and thus overheating). Users seem to find it extremely comfortable, which is great.

The top cover is decent enough, but it’s not the softest cover out there.

Value

This mattress represents excellent value for money. Although it is one of the pricier mattresses on this list, it’s also highly rated by users, and it’s durable. Plus, it has a 100-day sleep trial, so you can give it a good test to see if it suits you or not.

It also has a 10-year warranty against manufacturing defects.

Other Features

The top layer includes graphite (to absorb moisture) and cooling gel. It’s designed to be breathable and to reduce sinkage, which means it’s a great choice for hot sleepers. Although the cover is not machine washable, it’s removable, meaning you can give it a good clean by hand from time to time.

It’s an 8-inch mattress, so definitely on the thicker side.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty included
  • Very comfortable
  • Graphite and cooling gel is good for hot sleepers
  • Cover is removable

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • Pretty pricey for a thin mattress

Olee Sleep 7-Inch Mattress

Design and Materials

The Olee Sleep 7-Inch Mattress is made from three layers – the bottom layer is made from 3.5 inches of supportive foam, in the middle there is 2.5 inches of softer foam, and on top, there is 1 inch of I-GEL infused foam (this is gel that is designed to disperse temperature accumulation, preventing warm spots from forming where you sleep).

It also has a removable, washable poly jacquard cover. The foam is CertiPUR-US Certified, and Oeko-Tex certified (this means there are no harmful materials, like heavy metals).

Firmness and Comfort

This is a medium-firm mattress and strikes just the right balance between support and comfort. The high-density foam layer at the bottom is designed to relieve pressure on your joints and to properly support correct spine alignment – so it’s great for people with back or shoulder pain. In fact, some users with back pain reported improvement after sleeping on this mattress.

This mattress can slide around a little if it doesn’t fit properly, so it’s important to make sure that the measurements match your bed frame. However, it does have great movement absorption, so if your partner is a fidgety sleeper, it may help you to get a better night’s sleep.

The mattress cover is very soft, too, which is a nice bonus.

Value

This mattress comes with a 10-year warranty, but no sleep trial. It’s fairly good value for money given the price point, but the lack of sleep trial is a real shame.

Other Features

The I-GEL foam on the top layer is designed to keep you cool at night, which is great. Having a machine washable cover is always a good idea with a thin mattress, so we were pleased to see that.

It’s a 7-inch mattress. These aren’t as easy to come by as 6-inch or 8-inch mattresses, so it’s good to have the option if you want to try something slightly thinner than an 8-inch option.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • 10-year warranty
  • Top layer of foam is ideal for temperature regulation
  • Washable cover
  • Great for relieving joint pressure

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • Lack of sleep trial
  • It may slide around the bed if it doesn’t fit just right

Signature Design by Ashley 8-Inch Innerspring Mattress

Design and Materials

The Signature Design by Ashley 8-Inch Mattress is made from three layers. The bottom layer is made from high-quality coil units, followed by a high-density foam layer, and a 2-inch quilt foam comfort layer on top.

The materials are hypoallergenic to prevent dust mites, pollen, and mold, which is great, and the foam is CertiPUR-US certified.

Firmness and Comfort

This is advertised as a firm mattress, but it’s more on the medium-firm side according to users. If you’re looking for a super firm mattress, this won’t quite cut it, as it does provide a bit of comfort and ‘squishiness’ in the top comfort layer.

It feels very much like a traditional innerspring mattress, so if you like that, it may be a good option for you.

Value

There is a 10-year warranty against defects for this mattress, but unfortunately, they do not offer a sleep trial. However, the price point is pretty good, and most users report it to be pretty durable, so it should last a good few years.

Other Features

It doesn’t have a cooling gel layer, but users say that it offers a cool nights’ sleep, regardless. You won’t sink into the top foam layer too much, which means that it’s going to be a little cooler than a full foam mattress.

The cover is not removable, meaning it’s more difficult to keep it clean, but thanks to the hypoallergenic materials, it should provide a bit of protection against dust mites and bacteria growth.

It’s an 8-inch mattress, so on the thicker side for a thin mattress.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • Feels like a traditional innerspring mattress
  • Hypoallergenic, so good for those with allergies
  • 10-year warranty included

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • No sleep trial
  • No removable cover

Signature Sleep Contour Reversible Coil Mattress

Design and Materials

The Signature Sleep Contour 8-Inch Reversible Coil Mattress is made from three layers – two layers of high-density support foam, and a layer of independently encased coils sandwiched between them.

The mattress can be flipped and rotated to ensure even wear over time. It comes with a soft cover that is not removable. The foam in this mattress is CertiPUR-US Certified.

Firmness and Comfort

This is advertised as a firm mattress, but users found it to be more on the medium-firm side. The foam layers help to give it extra softness, but the coils are very supportive.

Users found it to be super-comfortable, and the fact that you can rotate and flip it means that you won’t have to worry about wearing out the coils in one spot.

Value

This mattress comes with a 1-year limited warranty, which isn’t as long as others on this list. It also lacks a sleep trial. However, it’s a durable mattress that should last a long time, so we feel it’s still pretty good value for money.

Other Features

This mattress lacks cooling gel or a removable cover. If you’re a hot sleeper, you might find it harder to keep this one clean. Hot sleepers didn’t find this mattress to be a problem however, and it doesn’t seem to get ‘hot’ in comparison to pure memory foam mattresses.

It’s an 8-inch mattress, and due to the coils, it can’t be rolled up and stored – it’s better suited for a bed where it can stay there permanently, rather than being stored away between uses.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • Comfortable, ideal for those who like the feel of an innerspring mattress
  • Doesn’t get hot overnight
  • Durable

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • Limited warranty
  • No sleep trial
  • No removable cover

Sweetnight Breeze 8-Inch Memory Foam Mattress

Design and Materials

The Sweetnight Breeze Memory Foam Mattress has two layers – 2 inches of gel-infused memory foam, and 6 inches of comfort foam. It has a removable, machine washable cotton cover.

The materials used are hypoallergenic, with no harmful materials like heavy metals, and it’s designed to slow the growth of germs and bacteria.

Firmness and Comfort

This is advertised as a medium-firm mattress, but most users think it’s definitely more ‘firm’ than ‘medium’. If you want a truly medium-firm mattress, you might want to keep looking, as this will be a bit of a disappointment if you’re expecting something softer.

The two layers of foam help to provide comfort and stability, and it’s particularly good for side sleepers, as it offers support as well as a little bit of cushioning from the comfort foam.

The cotton cover is soft and comfortable too, and as a side bonus, it doesn’t smell as strongly as other foam mattresses tend to upon arrival.

Value

Sweetnight offers a 10-year warranty against defects and a 30-day trial period. If you don’t like it, you can return it for a full refund within 30 days (with some exceptions – if it gets stained, for instance, you won’t be eligible for a refund).

It’s on the pricier side compared to others on this list, but it’s a good brand with excellent reviews, so we feel it still represents good value for money.

Other Features

In terms of keeping cool, the top layer of foam is gel-infused, helping sleepers to regulate their temperatures. It’s also designed to transfer heat and circulate air through the foam, which is ideal for stopping you from getting too warm.

It’s an 8-inch mattress, so right at the top end of what constitutes a ‘thin’ mattress. For this reason, it’s not as easy to roll up and store, but it’s ideal for people wanting to try out a thin mattress without going for a 5 or 6-inch option.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • Removable, machine washable cover
  • Naturally hypoallergenic
  • Cooling gel in top layer of foam prevents overheating
  • 10-year warranty and 100-day sleep trial

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • Firmer than advertised

Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress

Design and Materials

The Zinus 6-Inch Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress is made from two layers – 5 inches of high-density base support foam, and 1 inch of soft memory foam. It also has a soft, poly jacquard cover.

The foam is infused with green tea and charcoal, to absorb moisture and keep the mattress fresh. The foam is CertiPUR-US certified.

Firmness and Comfort

This is a very firm mattress. Some users have described it as being the hardest mattress they’ve ever slept on. If you’re looking for a very firm, thin mattress, this could well be the one for you. If you’re after something squishy and comfortable though, you’re better off looking elsewhere.

Despite being firm, it’s still comfortable – ideal for people with certain types of back pain, as you won’t sink into the mattress too much, which is good for keeping your spine correctly aligned.

Value

Zinus offers a 10-year warranty against manufacturing defects, but no sleep trial. This could prove problematic if you’ve never slept on a thin, firm mattress before – if you try it and realize it’s no good for you, you’ll be stuck with it.

The price point is great, however – it’s one of the cheapest that we’ve reviewed on this list. It’s also durable according to users, so it’s still good value for money despite the lack of sleep trial.

Other Features

It doesn’t have a cooling gel layer or a removable washable cover, which means that keeping this mattress clean may be an issue.

However, even hot sleepers seemed to find this mattress comfortable, and the green tea and charcoal-infused foam help to keep the mattress fresh and slow the growth of bacteria.

It’s a 6-inch mattress, so pretty thin.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • Green tea and charcoal-infused foam help to keep the mattress fresh
  • Very firm, so good for those looking for a truly firm mattress
  • Good price point

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • No removable cover
  • No sleep trial

Zinus Ultima Memory Foam Mattress

Design and Materials

The Zinus 8-Inch Ultima Memory Foam Mattress is made from three layers of foam – it has a top layer of comfort memory foam, a middle layer of air-flow enhancing foam, and a base layer of high-density support foam. The foam is infused with green tea and charcoal, to reduce odors and maintain freshness. It comes with a soft cover, which is not removable.

The foam is CertiPUR-US Certified.

Firmness and Comfort

This is a firm mattress with little sinkage, which is good for spinal alignment. The top layer of softer foam does provide a bit of comfort, but if you’re used to a softer mattress, this one will feel pretty firm in comparison.

Users say it’s a comfortable mattress, particularly good for those who wake up sore after sleeping in a softer mattress.

Value

Zinus offers a 10-year limited warranty against defects, but no sleep trial. Users felt it represented good value for money, however, especially given the quality of the materials used.

Other Features

The open-cell layer is good for increasing ventilation, which is good, as there is no cooling gel layer here. The charcoal and green tea infusion will help to keep the mattress fresh, which offsets the fact that the cover cannot be removed or washed.

It’s an 8-inch mattress, but it can still be rolled up for storage or transportation.

WHAT WE LIKED

  • Green tea and charcoal infusion helps to keep mattress fresh
  • Truly firm
  • 10-year warranty included

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

  • No sleep trial
  • No removable cover

Who Should Use a Thin Mattress?

Thin mattresses are ideal for a few situations. They’re perfect for children, as they’re a good stepping stone from a cot bed or toddler bed into a ‘big kid’ bed – a thin mattress is comfortable for them, but also not so big as to be overwhelmingly high off the ground.

As a parent, I know that the jump into a ‘real’ bed can be a big deal, so a thin mattress is ideal for kids who are finding the transition difficult.

If you’re living in a small space, a thin mattress could be a good choice too. This is because they are (usually) easy to roll up and store – for example, in a cupboard or a garage. If you want to have guests stay over but don’t have a guest room, a thin mattress is ideal.

Thin mattresses are also great for bunk beds – by having a thinner mattress, you can create more room – preventing head bumps!

What Are the Benefits of a Thin Mattress?

There are several benefits to using a thin mattress:

  • Back Support: a thin mattress can provide great support for your back, and can encourage correct spinal alignment. This can help with pain relief not only in your back, but your shoulders and neck, too. Having a mattress that is too thick and squishy can encourage you to sink into it, which isn’t great for your spine – a thin mattress can help you to stay correctly positioned.
  • Absorbs Movement: If you’re a light sleeper, you may find yourself getting irritated by your significant other tossing and turning in bed. A thin memory foam mattress can absorb some of that movement, meaning you’re less likely to feel it when they move around.
  • Ease of Use: If you struggle climbing in and out of bed, you’ll want a thin mattress to make things easier.

Are There Any Downsides to Using a Thin Mattress?

A downside to using a thin mattress is that you may find it harder to keep it clean and hygienic. If you’re a hot sleeper and you sweat a lot, you may find that the sweat absorbs through each layer. As we mentioned earlier, mattress manufacturers do try to counteract this with measures such as cooling gel, or using open-cell foam to encourage airflow.

Can I Fold a Thin Mattress?

You can fold a thin mattress (but only if it’s made from foam). It might be better to roll it if you can. However, some mattresses come with pre-folded lines, in which case, you should fold it along those lines.

How Long Does it Take for a New mattress to Settle?

It takes a little while for a new mattress to settle, particularly if it’s a foam mattress – these can take a while to expand. Ideally, you should wait 72 hours for your new mattress to settle completely.

Is a Thin Mattress Good For Back Pain, and if so, What is the Best Firmness Level For Me?

Yes – having a very thick, squishy mattress can cause you to sink a little, which isn’t great for spinal support. Thin mattresses are better as they encourage correct spinal alignment. The ideal firmness for back pain is medium-firm – that should be comfortable but supportive enough to encourage proper alignment.

You may also have to consider which type of firmness you need depending on your sleeping position – read our guide on the best sleeping positions for more information.

Are Thin Mattresses Good for RVs?

Thin mattresses sound perfect for RVs, but actually, RV beds are smaller and require mattresses that are specifically designed for them.

Do You Have any Tips for Using a Thin Mattress?

The main things to consider are:

  • Let it settle properly – it might look a bit lopsided or wonky as it expands, but it does take time
  • The smell of a new foam mattress will dissipate eventually
  • Make sure you check the warranty before you buy, as some manufacturers make it more difficult than others to return a used mattress

Hopefully, this has helped you to find the perfect thin mattress  – whether you want it for back support, to keep in a spare room for guests, or for your child, you should be able to find one that suits you.
